RESILIENCE, AN APTITUDE

A day doesn’t go by without us speaking about the resilience of human beings in the face of injustice, climate change or migration. Resilience is what allows us to go beyond ourselves, to believe in justice and to go beyond the agreed and the conforming, the beautiful and the ugly.
Applied to any place or situation, resilience is the ability to face and absorb disturbances and constraints in micro and mega events in our lives. Human beings constantly need to adapt their functioning and their attitude when confronted with disturbances, in order to start and manage the recovering process.
Artists face these challenges by anticipating them often with new propositions, shining a new light on the situation, allowing us to reflect, adapt and even change. Artists have the capacity to look differently at their peers and at the desperation with which certain human beings spend their lives fighting, crossing continents and seas, or rebuilding themselves in the face of loss and the need to exist.
This exhibition project addresses the capacity of resilience, which is present at the core of every human being and allows everyone to live in the present, to exceed it, as well as to share it. There are infinite ways to be resilient and each of the seven artists have their own way of sharing their aptitude to be resilient.
Ivàn Argote invites us to walk on words and Corinne Silva proposes to observe bullet impacts in the bark of trees in Sarajevo, while Eirene Efstathiou draws the way insurgents were hiding during the Greek civil war. Michèle Magema develops visual strategies to counter-act the damages of colonialism in Congo and Shiraz Bayjoo reveals to us haunted places in Mauritius. Still present today, savage capitalism is usurping natural sources as much as it is imposing its own values. Younes Baba-Ali and Yonamine operate on a poetic level to resist the alienation post-colonial countries are going through.

Il ne se passe pas une journée sans observer la capacité de résilience de l’être humain face à l’injustice, aux changements climatiques ou aux migrations. La résilience est ce qui nous permet d’aller au-delà de nous-mêmes, de croire en nous et d’aller au-delà du convenu, du beau et du bien.
Appliquée à tout endroit ou situation, la résilience est cette capacité à faire face, à absorber perturbations et contraintes du quotidien, dans les micro et méga évènements de la vie. Les êtres humains doivent constamment s’adapter et composer avec ces perturbations pour arriver à gérer leurs vies tant bien que mal, dans un fascinant processus de reconstruction.
Les artistes participent à ces conversions et les anticipent souvent en proposant des regards différents qui nous permettent de réfléchir, de modifier et parfois aussi de changer. Les artistes ont cette capacité à regarder différemment leurs contemporains et le désespoir avec lequel certains êtres humains passent leur vie à se battre, à traverser les continents et les mers, ou à se reconstruire face à la perte et au besoin de vivre.
Ce projet d’exposition parle de la capacité de résilience inscrite au plus profond de chaque être humain qui permet à chacun de vivre l’instant présent, de le dépasser, autant que de le partager. Il existe d’innombrables façons d’être résilient et chacun des sept artistes choisis dans cette proposition développe sa propre façon de transmettre son aptitude à être résilient.
Iván Argote nous invite à marcher sur les mots et Corinne Silva propose d’observer les impacts de balles dans l’écorce des arbres à Sarajevo, tandis qu’Eirene Efstathiou dessine la façon dont les insurgés se cachaient pendant la guerre civile grecque. Michèle Magema met en œuvre des stratégies visuelles visant à contrer les dommages de la période coloniale au Congo et Shiraz Bayjoo montre des endroits hantés de l’Ile Maurice. Plus que jamais présent, le capitalisme sauvage usurpe les ressources naturelles autant qu’il impose ses propres valeurs. Pour résister à l’aliénation que traversent les pays postcoloniaux, Younes Baba- Ali et Yonamine optent pour une stratégie poétique.
